The agreement, signed at Palazzo della Valle by presidents Massimiliano Giansanti (Confagricoltura) and Carlo Siciliani (Uniceb), aims to encourage self-sufficiency and quality production.
Strengthening the Italian beef supply chain and boosting domestic cattle production through a joint initiative: this is the goal of the memorandum of understanding signed today by Confagricoltura and Uniceb (Italian Meat Supply Chain Union). The agreement aims to address the sector's needs, particularly in light of the decline in the number of calves arriving from France—a long-standing supplier.
Indeed, there is growing demand for increased meat production from a fully "Made in Italy" supply chain, reflecting consumer preference for high-quality domestic products.
Currently, approximately 50% of the meat produced in Italy comes from fattening animals imported from abroad; France is the primary exporter to Italy, supplying over 70% of feeder cattle (around 800,000 head).
Italy is the fourth-largest beef producer in Europe (with a 10% share), ranking alongside Poland and trailing France (20%), Germany (15%), and Spain (11%) (source: Ismeamercati). Italian production is estimated at around 670,000 tonnes; of this, 320,000 tonnes—or just under 50%—derive from the importation of live animals, while meat imports stand at approximately 430,000 tonnes (source: Ismeamercati, based on 2024 data). Consequently, the self-sufficiency rate stands at around 40%. The agreement, signed at Palazzo della Valle by presidents Massimiliano Giansanti (Confagricoltura) and Carlo Siciliani (Uniceb), aims to encourage domestic sourcing and quality production by offering member companies a stable marketing channel based on shared standards and objective criteria for determining prices and premiums.
The project specifically targets particular production and rearing lines. Special emphasis is placed on product quality, good calf management practices from birth, environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and the reduction of antibiotic use.
This collaboration between Confagricoltura and Uniceb—it was noted—contributes to the balanced growth of the Italian agri-food supply chain, supporting the competitiveness of Italian businesses and a fairer distribution of value across all stages of the chain.
