The CultMeat research group launches the Colemus project
Whilst in Sagunto – that is, Rome – cultured meat is banned, in Turin the University is working hard to make the ‘Frankenstein steak’ ‘ethical’. Metaphors aside, the University of Turin is involved in the Colemus research project (from the Latin, meaning ‘we cultivate’) run by the CultMeat group (co-funded by LAV, the Anti-Vivisection League), which is developing cell-based farming protocols to produce cultured meat that is increasingly ethical, efficient and free from components of animal origin. The Colemus project aims to develop cell-culture systems entirely free from animal-derived components, making cultured meat increasingly consistent with the principles of animal welfare and more readily scalable to industrial levels.
LAV’s donation funds the research fellowship awarded, via an open competition, to Sveva Bottini, a researcher specialising in the field of cultured meat, who will carry out laboratory work coordinated by Alessandro Bertero and Tiziana Francesca Cannizzo at the Departments of Molecular Biotechnology and Health Sciences and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Turin.
