Italy is – as is well known and has historically been the case – a net importer of beef. Setting aside the €300 million incentive scheme to improve self-sufficiency in this sector, launched last year by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (see EFA News article), for which it is still too early to assess the effects, the statistics speak for themselves.
According to recent figures from Assocarni, the Confindustria federation representing the main beef processors, in the fifteen months between January 2025 and March 2026, imports of fresh or chilled meat from European Union countries totalled 367,504.363 tonnes. The country from which Italy imports the most is Slovenia (41.48 per cent), followed by Poland (23.67 per cent), Romania (16.85 per cent), Portugal (16.72 per cent), the Netherlands (14.43 per cent), France (18 per cent), Spain (13 per cent), Germany (13 per cent), Ireland (7 per cent), Denmark (4 per cent), Belgium (3 per cent), Austria (2 per cent), Slovakia (1.32 per cent), Lithuania (1 per cent), Croatia (1 per cent) and Sweden (0.5 per cent).
