Eat meat, don’t go to war

The EU row over ‘meat sounding’: new amendments are to be considered on 2 September

29, Aug 2026

EU lawmakers are reopening the debate on restricting the use of terms relating to plant-based products. Many are muttering under their breath that at a time like this – to call it ‘dramatic’ would be an understatement – there are more important and urgent matters to consider; yet the EU is heading towards yet another battle over whether plant-based foods can use familiar names associated with meat.

As reported by the specialist website  Food Ingredients First, the new amendments tabled before the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) would extend the EU’s protected terminology relating to meat to include ‘burger’, ‘hamburger’, ‘sausage’, ‘nugget’, ‘schnitzel’, ‘meatball’ and other names. The amendments form part of the post-2027 reform of the Common Market Organisation (CMO) and will be examined by the AGRI Committee on 2 September.
