Pig and cattle: two supply chains, two market strategies

The global market for pork and beef will show different trends in 2026

04, Sep 2026

According to the latest USDA estimates, the global market for pigmeat and beef will follow different trends in 2026: the pigmeat market is predominantly geared towards domestic consumption, whilst the beef market is more exposed to international trade.

PORK accounts for 66 per cent of the total volume of the two species, equivalent to approximately 14 kg per capita. As much as 91 per cent of pig production is consumed domestically, whilst only 9 per cent is destined for export (10.4 Mt). China remains the leading producer and consumer, with 59.5 Mt produced, almost half of the global total. The EU saw a 1.2 per cent fall in production and a 7.6 per cent drop in exports (due to African swine fever in Spain, the leading exporter among the 27 EU Member States), whilst exports from the United States (+3.3 per cent) and Brazil (+6.8 per cent) increased.

The BEEF SECTOR is more oriented towards international trade. Production stood at 61.6 Mt overall (-1.1 per cent). Twenty-two per cent was exported, totalling 13.8 Mt. The United States recorded a fall in production (-0.8 per cent) and exports (-8.2 per cent), whilst Chinese consumption fell by 7.5 per cent, partly due to a slowdown in domestic spending power. Brazil retains its position as the world’s leading exporter, with 4.27 Mt; for the past few days, its access to the EU market has been hampered by a ban on imports of certain products that do not comply with European regulations on the use of antimicrobials.

The figures confirm that there is no single formula for the livestock sector. Efficiency, competitiveness and international strategies must be combined with specialisation, quality and flexibility. Markets – whether domestic or international – are increasingly having to contend with global uncertainty.
