Meat duty exemption: the U-turn has left consumers and farmers dissatisfied
The protectionist and retaliatory nature of the tariffs that US President Donald Trump continues to impose on the world is evident in his latest move, announced just now: a 90-day exemption – that is, for the next three months – from import duties on 300,000 tonnes of minced beef.
This new measure is Trump’s attempt to bring down the price of beef in the United States: a price which, in recent years – since Trump returned to the presidency in January 2025 – has risen sharply, by around 24 per cent, due to a reduction in cattle herds, higher production costs and drought-stricken pastures. Last July, the price of minced beef hit an all-time high of $15 per kilo, more than 10 per cent higher than a year ago. The size of the national cattle herd in the United States – that is, the total number of cattle on the country’s pastures – is at its lowest level since the 1950s. Now, however, many are wondering what impact the import of 300,000 tonnes of beef might have on prices.
