The FAO meat price index averaged 127.9 points in August, 1.2 points (1.0 per cent) higher than the revised figure for July and close to the level recorded a year earlier. The increase was driven by higher prices for poultry, pork and sheepmeat, partly offset by a fall in beef prices.International poultry prices rose following a recovery in export prices in Brazil, driven by strong global demand for imports.

Pork prices also rose, mainly due to higher prices in the European Union, where high temperatures continued to slow the growth of livestock, limiting the supply of pigs for slaughter. This increase was partly offset by lower prices in Brazil, due to ample supply.
