Measures to protect the species from overfishing come into force
Today, the measures adopted by the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) to tackle unsustainable Russian mackerel fishing in the North-East Atlantic officially come into force. Initiated by a proposal from the European Union, these measures aim to protect the mackerel stock, which is currently under severe conservation pressure due to years of overfishing.
In 2026, Russia unilaterally increased its quota to 67,548 tonnes, equivalent to 22.5 per cent of the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and almost five times its 2004 quota. In response, the NEAFC measures have set a limit of 1,495 tonnes on Russian mackerel catches in international waters. This limit reflects and compensates for Russia’s persistent overfishing.
