Small-scale artisanal fishing is a traditional activity that has successfully adapted to modern times and can ensure a sustainable future for hundreds of businesses in Emilia-Romagna. By its very nature, small-scale artisanal fishing has a low environmental impact, both in terms of CO₂ emissions and the selectivity of the gear used, which is not towed and therefore has no adverse effects on the seabed. In the Goro and Porto Garibaldi area, this fishing activity can also represent an important alternative for clamshell farmers, who are facing extremely serious difficulties due to the blue crab crisis, which has drastically reduced production and, consequently, the profitability of their businesses.
