Methodological clarity and technical discussion are needed. API is continuing its work to introduce increasingly stringent and scientifically sound requirements
In light of reports regarding the ranking of the Italian ‘Sustainable Aquaculture’ certification in the Aquatic Life Institute’s (ALI) 2026 Aquaculture Certification Schemes Benchmark, the Italian Fish Farmers’ Association considers it necessary to clarify the true scope of the assessment.
As specified in the report itself, the benchmark does not measure actual animal welfare conditions on farms, nor does it assess the implementation of requirements, the quality of inspections, the outcomes of certification or the compliance of businesses. The analysis concerns solely the presence and wording of certain requirements in publicly available documents, examined according to a methodology developed independently by ALI.
