340-kilo giant tuna caught in the North Sea

For scientists, this marks the ‘return’ of a species that had been absent for 60 years

25, Aug 2026

If we’re feeling a little nostalgic, what happened in the North Sea brings to mind *The Old Man and the Sea*, the short story by Ernest Hemingway. In that story, it was the elderly fisherman Santiago who (almost) caught a gigantic marlin, a type of swordfish; in our case, it is the five crew members of the fishing vessel ‘The Dominator’ who, some 16 kilometres off Whitby in Yorkshire, hauled a 338-kilogram bluefin tuna on board.
