FEDERPESCA: VON DER LEYEN’S ACKNOWLEDGMENT IS WELCOME, BUT THE EU MUST CHANGE COURSE ON FISHERIES POLICY
Rome, September 16, 2026 – In her State of the Union address today, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged the gesture of solidarity shown by fishermen from France, Italy, and Finland, who donated 110 tons of nets—the very tools they use to earn their living—to save lives in Ukraine.
This initiative was proudly supported and led by Federpesca, in collaboration with the Civil Protection Department of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, across the fishing communities of Mazara del Vallo, Fiumicino, and Civitavecchia.
“It is a gesture of extraordinary solidarity that speaks volumes about the character of Europe’s fishermen,” stated Federpesca Director Francesca Biondo.
“Yet, despite this significant acknowledgment, it seems the Commission remembers the vital role of fishermen only when it is convenient. While they are being praised in Strasbourg, technical meetings continue to see proposals for cuts to fishing days—measures that harm the very men and women who have just been celebrated,” the Director continued.
“Fishermen have done their part. Now it is time for the European Union to do its part by protecting and supporting those who feed Europe, and by recognizing the value of the fishing industry not just during emergencies but in everyday policy—putting an end to an approach that has devastated our fishing communities in recent years,” Biondo concluded.
