Fisheries and aquaculture: the EU comes to Germany’s aid

Aid totalling 4.5 million euros has been approved for businesses in difficulty

22, Aug 2026

The European Commission has approved a German state aid scheme worth €4.5 million to support businesses in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors that are facing rising fuel prices due to the crisis in the Middle East. The scheme was approved under the Temporary State Aid Framework for the Middle East Crisis (Metsaf), adopted by the Commission on 29 April 2026.

The aid will be provided in the form of direct grants. The scheme provides for the granting of a limited amount of aid, calculated on the basis of the rise in fuel prices. The aid intensity corresponds to 70 per cent of the estimated increase in fuel costs for businesses in the fisheries and aquaculture sector during the period from 1 March to 23 July 2026. The aid will not exceed €50,000 per business.
