Ecomondo is back and the Blue Economy expands with an entire pavilion dedicated to blue growth

Fisheries and Aquaculture at the centre of conferences, workshops and networking: Legacoop Agroalimentare confirms its commitment within the Technical Scientific Committee of Ecomondo by directing 6 national and international conferences

With over 7,500 km of coastline, Italy has the potential to be a global leader in the Blue Economy, which contributes approximately 70 billion euros to the national economy and employs over 400,000 people, according to data from the latest EU report. This sector enhances marine and coastal resources in a sustainable way, offering raw materials, energy, seafood with important nutritional values and tourism, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity and the prevention of natural risks. The city of Rimini will once again host Ecomondo, scheduled for 5 to 8 November at the Exhibition Centre. Over 1,620 exhibiting brands (16% of which are foreign) will be present on 166,000 square metres of exhibition space, 650 hosted buyers and official delegations from 65 countries, in particular from North Africa, Europe, North America and Latin America. Over 250 events including conferences, conventions and workshops with a scientific, economic, technical and scenario focus. Among the exhibition districts present in this twenty-seventh edition, the Blue Economy or Economy of the Sea takes its place, this year with an entire pavilion (B8). Legacoop Agroalimentare, with the President Cristian Maretti together with Elena Ghezzi, Head of fishing and aquaculture, Antonio Gottardo, Head of Agri-food of Legacoop Veneto and with Massimo Bellavista, Head of fishing and aquaculture for Emilia-Romagna, confirms its commitment also within the Scientific Technical Committee, with which it takes care of the organization of six national and international conferences. The first event, sponsored by the Alliance of Fisheries Cooperatives of Emilia-Romagna, is scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, at 10:00 am, at the Agorà Blue Economy Community (Pavilion B8) with the Workshop "Restoration of the delta and marine habitat, contrast to the proliferation of the blue crab, encourage its use and consumption", which will be attended by the DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission, the Director General of ISPRA, the Extraordinary Commissioner for the Blue Crab emergency, representatives of the Regional Institutions of Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, the Mayors of Porto Tolle and Goro, the Universities of Padua, Bologna and Ferrara, the Trade Associations (in addition to Legacoop Agroalimentare, Confcooperative/Fedagri Pesca and AGCI/Agrital) and the representatives of the Consortia and Cooperatives of Goro and Scardovari.

On the afternoon of November 6, at 2:30 p.m., in the Sala Girasole, an event dedicated to the European Fund for Maritime Activities, Fisheries and Aquaculture, in particular to priority 3 of the FEAMPA in support of coastal communities in the development of participatory strategies for the Blue Economy, organized by the FLAG/GALPA Costa dell’Emilia-Romagna and which will see the participation and involvement of 7 Local Action Groups of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Sea, in sharing the different development strategies and with the participation of FAMENET, the European Network of all the FLAG/GALPA established for these six years of community programming. The event will continue on Thursday 7th at 2 pm with the international conference “Algaculture for harvesting and life”, at the Agorà Augusto, which intends to explore the opportunities related to the cultivation and consumption of algae, whose versatility can be used in the food sector, in cosmetics, in animal feed but also in biogas, as demonstrated by the start up Cooperativa ITACA with Ulisse l’Alga Italiana. The conference events will continue on the last day of Ecomondo on Friday 8th November: at 10 am the transnational conference “Reduction and management of waste in fishing ports to promote sustainable fishing”, at Sala Ravezzi 2, which involves the University of Padua together with the Cooperativa Lavoratori del Mare of Rimini and the Cooperativa MARE of Cattolica in the Italy/Croatia Cooperation project #FishNoWaste which aims to experiment and validate virtuous models in the collection of waste fished at sea, especially plastic, but also in the management and reuse of waste produced in fishing ports. Also on Friday 8th but at 11 am, at the Blue Economy Agora, the conference “Blue skills and employment development: strategies and good practices for blue growth” will be held, in which the European Commission – DG MARE will participate together with transnational delegations from Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy together with Europêche, the European Association of National Organisations of EU Fishing Enterprises – to share experiences and discuss development strategies for sea professions. Globally, the Blue Economy is worth around 1,300 billion euros and is expected to double by 2030. In Europe, it generates around 665 billion euros in turnover, representing 5% of the EU GDP, and creates almost 5 million jobs. Italy, together with Spain and Greece, is among the main countries for jobs in coastal tourism and has a strong presence in fishing and aquaculture.
