Federpesca: high diesel fuel prices put fishing businesses at risk.

The new increase in diesel prices puts an already fragile situation at risk

03, Mar 2026

Rome, March 3, 2026 - Federpesca expresses deep concern over the escalation of attacks and international tensions in recent days, which is causing new and significant repercussions on energy markets. The immediate increase in diesel prices is already having tangible effects on fishing businesses, exacerbating a still fragile economic situation. Fuel accounts for over 60% of a fishing vessel's production costs, making it the largest expense for Italian fishing fleets.

"A further increase in prices," states Federpesca Director General Francesca Biondo, "risks compromising the economic sustainability of businesses, drastically reducing operating margins and jeopardizing the continuity of fishing activity, employment, and the stability of the entire national fishing industry. The sector has already been facing a combination of critical factors for years: reduced fishing days, widespread cost increases, market instability, and international competition. In this context, yet another energy shock risks representing a point of no return for many businesses."

"We therefore call on the Government and the relevant institutions to monitor energy price trends closely and to urgently implement appropriate support measures to limit the impact of rising fuel prices and ensure the economic survival of fishing businesses," Biondo continues.

"The protection of national fishing is not just a matter for businesses and seafarers, but also concerns food security, the economic viability of coastal communities, and the preservation of a strategic territorial asset," the director concludes.

The sector remains open to immediate discussions with the institutions to identify rapid and effective solutions to protect national fishing.
