Soaring Diesel Costs: Federpesca Calls for a Crisis Roundtable

It is urgent to identify concrete and timely measures to support businesses.

22, Sep 2026

Federpesca has requested that the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry urgently convene a new meeting of the fisheries sector crisis roundtable, with the aim of identifying concrete and timely measures to support businesses.

The alarm stems from the continuous and steep rise in the cost of marine diesel; in recent weeks, prices have surged significantly again, peaking at €1.60 per liter in various Italian fishing ports and sparking widespread unrest. This price hike makes going out to sea economically unsustainable for businesses, some of which have already halted operations because they cannot cover the costs.

“The most serious issue is that the resources—while substantial—arrive on a timeline that does not align with the businesses' actual operational needs. When a company needs immediate liquidity to cover running costs but aid arrives months later, it incurs debt in the interim. And this debt is rising at an alarming rate,” the Federation emphasizes. “We are not talking about a theoretical risk; it is already happening. That is why we have asked the Minister to prioritize immediate actions: unblocking and accelerating the disbursement of already allocated funds, extending existing measures, simplifying the procedures for accessing grants—starting with the issue of the DURC (social security compliance certificate)—and identifying rapid liquidity tools for struggling businesses.”

“We are well aware of what the Government has already done for the sector. It is precisely in the spirit of collaboration that has always guided our discussions that we are once again calling for further attention to the matter,” concludes Federpesca.
