12 July
The request of ONAF and the Consorzi di tutela has been granted: 12 July will be celebrated as St Lucius, the patron saint of cheesemakers. The date was chosen to celebrate Italian cheese-making tradition and culture. In 2025 there will therefore be 43 Italian municipalities that can boast the recognition of “City of Cheese”, becoming part of a network that unites territories that are different in terms of culture and geography, but share a strong identity based on quality cheese production.
Povegliano, in the heart of the Treviso area, celebrates its history through iconic cheeses such as Casatella Trevigiana DOP, Morlacco and Bastardo del Grappa. Casina, in the hills of Reggio Emilia, is one of the cradles of Parmigiano Reggiano DOP, an Italian excellence recognised all over the world. Massa Lubrense, the pearl of the Sorrento Peninsula, ties its identity to the tradition of mozzarella and buffalo and cow's milk processing, in a unique landscape and biodiversity context.
'The Cities of Cheese project,' said Pier Carlo Adami, who presented the proposal to Senator Giorgio Salvitti, advisor to Minister Lollobrigida, on 28 March during the ceremony to designate Rome as the City of Cheese, 'was born to enhance Italian dairy culture in its links with history, identity and tourism. Every year, the 44 ONAF Delegations spread throughout Italy propose a number of cities. Each new nomination is a step forward in the construction of a network
