Biondo: "Now Europe must do its part to address energy costs."
Rome, March 31, 2026 - Federpesca expresses its full support for the position put forward by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, during the European Union Agriculture and Fisheries Council (Agrifish), in which Italy, along with other member states, called for the adoption of urgent measures to address the energy crisis affecting the fishing sector.
The discussions in Brussels highlighted the need for immediate action by the European Commission, through a revision of the FEAMPA regulation, to enable the activation of extraordinary support tools for fishing and aquaculture businesses, which have been severely impacted by rising energy costs.
"We welcome the Minister's initiative," stated Federpesca Director Francesca Biondo, "which addresses the concerns the sector has repeatedly expressed to national and European institutions. Rising energy prices are jeopardizing the economic sustainability of businesses and the production continuity of entire navies. Following the Government's significant intervention with the fuel tax credit, it is essential that Europe also play its part."
Federrpesca emphasizes the need to introduce concrete and immediately operational tools as part of the FEAMPA review. These include: direct support measures for businesses, modeled on the previous measure 5.68 of the EMFF 2014-2020, to offset rising operating costs; hull renewal and modernization measures aimed at improving energy efficiency; and actions to encourage generational turnover and attract new jobs to the sector.
"It is essential," the Director continues, "to create the conditions for businesses to continue operating, investing, and ensuring employment. Without rapid and targeted European intervention, the risk is a progressive suspension of production activities, with direct consequences for food security and the country's competitiveness."
Federpesca therefore reiterates the urgency of a coordinated European response that, alongside environmental sustainability objectives, fully recognizes the economic and social sustainability of the fishing sector, currently severely compromised by energy market dynamics.
"The Italian initiative in Agrifish represents an important step. Now it is necessary for Europe to respond to this request with concrete, timely tools appropriate to the gravity of the situation."
