AquaFarm 2026 is approaching its ninth edition at a time of mixed fortunes for Mediterranean aquaculture. The latest report on the state of fisheries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea (SoMFi) 2025, published by the FAO's General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) based on 2023 data, highlights that, including freshwater production, aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea area generates $9.3 billion and provides nearly 3 million tonnes of food from aquatic organisms. Marine and brackish water aquaculture alone is worth $5.2 billion and directly employs 113,000 people, now accounting for more than 45% of saltwater aquatic food production, having reached a volume of 940,000 tonnes of product.
