Tinned tuna: a solution to food waste

Over 60% of Italians say it is useful for this purpose

19, May 2026

Canned fish is a pantry staple for us: a practical and convenient alternative to fresh fish, ready to use, with a long shelf life, waste-free and packed with nutritional benefits. Thanks to their nutritional profile, they are ideal for ensuring an adequate intake of high-quality proteins, Omega-3, vitamins (B, D, A, E) and minerals (iodine, iron, calcium, selenium).

In the case of tinned tuna – a product which, it is worth noting, contains no preservatives – more than one in two Italians (56.5%) never waste it, with a further 20% wasting it less than once a year, around 10% doing so at least three times a year, and 4% doing so once or more a month. This is revealed by a survey conducted by AstraRicerche for Ancit (National Association of Fish Canning and Tuna Purse Seine Operators), carried out in April on a sample of 1,000 Italians aged between 18 and 65.
