The traditional start-of-year event with a 243 kg specimen sold for €2.8 million
The traditional New Year's auction at the Tokyo fish market once again set a record for the start of the year. A 243-kilogram specimen, caught off the coast of Oma in Aomori Prefecture, was sold for 510.3 million yen, equivalent to approximately 2.8 million euros. This is a historic record since records began in 1999: the bid clearly exceeds the previous record of 333.6 million yen, set in 2019 when the market first moved from Tsukiji to Toyosu, east of the capital.
