The Portonovo wild mussel is at risk of extinction: a real threat, because the number of specimens of this mussel, recognised as a Slow Food Presidium in 2004, has been steadily declining for several seasons now, due to rising temperatures, the high presence of mucilage and overfishing, as it is also fished illegally and by many private individuals. In previous years, the fishing period closed early. This year, the opening has been postponed by more than a month, from 15 May to 1 July. But this is not enough: as the scientific community that has been monitoring the situation in Portonovo Bay for months has pointed out, a longer stop is needed to give the mussels time to reproduce and the populations to grow in numbers.
