Already convicted of mafia association, company owner ran trade between Italy and Morocco
The Guardia di Finanza of the Caltanissetta Provincial Command executed a first-degree asset seizure order, issued by the Court of Caltanissetta - Precautionary Measures Section, upon a proposal made by the Caltanissetta District Anti-Mafia Directorate, against a Gela entrepreneur historically active in the fishing and seafood marketing sector, also on an international scale.
The measure, which was executed by the military of the Gico del Nucleo di Polizia Economico-Finanziaria of Caltanissetta with the operational support of the Aeronavale Operational Department of the Guardia di finanza of Palermo, concerned assets worth a total of approximately EUR 50 million, consisting of more than 40 properties, vehicles, bank accounts, company shares, vessels (fishing boats) and business compendiums, with offices and operational branches in Italy and Morocco.
The seizure originated from in-depth asset investigations involving 45 individuals and legal entities, reconstructing an impressive corporate and family network, as well as an evident inequality between declared income and the increase in assets observed over the period 1985-2022.
The entrepreneur at the centre of the case was definitively convicted of mafia association for having been a member of Cosa Nostra since the early 1990s. The man was initially acquitted at first instance by the Court of Gela, which returned the assets.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Caltanissetta then challenged the acquittal before the Court of Appeal of Caltanissetta, which found him guilty of the crime of mafia-type association, a ruling confirmed by the Court of Cassation in its sentence of 15 February 2024. In particular, it was ascertained that the Gela entrepreneur had been a reference subject for the mafia organisation.
