Federpesca: "An important result for sustainability and the sector."
Rome, October 16, 2025 - The derogation from the minimum size of 22 mm for the European clam (Chamelea gallina) has been extended for the next five years. This decision follows the vote by the European Parliament's Fisheries Committee to reject the objection presented by several Spanish EPP MEPs to the High Delegate regarding the extension of the derogation.
This recognition of the concrete results achieved by the Italian clam fishery management consortia, which in recent years have demonstrated a great sense of responsibility and commitment to sustainability, despite the challenging environmental and economic climate.
Federpesca welcomes the outcome of the vote with great satisfaction, which represents a major success for the Italian fishing sector. It is the fruit of intense teamwork and the decisive involvement of all Italian MEPs, who were able to garner broad support even among their colleagues from other countries.
"Italy worked as a team and won a difficult match. Thanks to the united commitment of our representatives, the Commission was able to confirm the scientific validity and sustainability of Italian fishing practices" – declares Federpesca.
"Today's vote is an important political result that protects a strategic sector worth €54 million and over 1,500 operators, and confirms that the path of responsibility and sustainability is the right one," Federpesca concludes.
