Extension of the fishing ban: FEDERPESCA calls for certainty for 2026.

The very severe measure is the only way to avoid the European infringement

The ministerial decree extending the fishing ban until November 30 has been published, following lengthy negotiations with the European Commission, which had proposed a ban on trawling throughout the Tyrrhenian Sea until the end of the year.

The extension of the fishing ban for an additional month represents an extremely burdensome measure for businesses and workers in the sector, compounding a contraction in production activity that has now exceeded the limits of economic and social sustainability. However, compared to the initial hypothesis of a total closure until December or a ban on fishing along the entire coastal strip up to four miles offshore, the extension to November 30 was the only viable solution to avoid the initiation of infringement proceedings by the European institutions.

"This situation," states Francesca Biondo, director of Federpesca, "confirms the urgent need to review the system for calculating fishing days and, above all, to provide businesses with greater certainty and flexibility to effectively plan their activities, which will be severely compromised this year. A technical discussion group with the sector must be convened immediately to define an adequate number of fishing days and clear rules for businesses for 2026, thus ensuring stability and sustainability for the sector."

"Now it is necessary to ensure rapid payment of the compensation provided for the closure, as well as strengthen support for producer organizations, which play a key role in coordinating and promoting the national fishing industry," the director concluded.
