Plastic pollution in ecosystems at 2,000 metres has been documented for the first time
It is currently estimated that around 12 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans every year. This plastic, which starts out as large pieces before breaking down into particles and becoming microplastics, contaminates marine ecosystems and inevitably ends up in the food chain. Numerous studies have documented the presence of microplastics in coastal waters and the surface layers of the oceans, but little is yet known about this issue as it relates to deep-sea ecosystems.
For the first time, research led by Se-Joo Kim and Jinyoung Jeong of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), has revealed that microplastics are also present in animals living in deep-sea hydrothermal vents.
