Study visit for 25 Algerian officials as part of the Economie Bleu project, promoted in collaboration with Legacoop Agroalimentare and Halieus.
ROME, October 20, 2025 – Twenty-five representatives of the Algerian cooperative world, including cooperative directors, public officials, fishermen, and fishing industry operators, arrived in Rome today, October 20th, for a study visit to Italy as part of the Economie Bleu project, promoted in collaboration with Legacoop Agroalimentare and Halieus.
The initiative, which is part of the cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean, includes, following the visit to Algeria by the Italian cooperative members of Legacoop Agroalimentare, a comprehensive program of meetings between Rome, Romagna, and Chioggia, with the aim of promoting the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and best practices in the cooperative fishing and aquaculture sector.
After an initial institutional meeting in Rome at the national headquarters of Legacoop Agroalimentare, the delegation will visit some of the most significant Italian fishing cooperatives: the Casa del Pescatore in Cattolica, the Mare cooperative, the Cooperativa Lavoratori del Mare in Rimini, the Casa del Pescatore in Cesenatico, La Fenice in Cervia, Copego in Goro, and finally the cooperatives in Chioggia.
The tour will conclude over the weekend with a stop dedicated to exploring the Chioggia fish market and engaging in direct dialogue with representatives of local fishing communities.
"This project represents an important step in strengthening the dialogue between the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean," emphasizes Cristian Maretti, president of Legacoop Agroalimentare. "With Economie Bleu, we want to promote a shared vision of the sea as a space for cooperation, exchange, and common growth, in line with the spirit of the Ocean Pact, which recognizes the Mediterranean as a strategic place not only environmental, but also political, cultural, and economic. It is essential to continue investing in training, innovation, and partnership programs that enhance the role of cooperatives as drivers of sustainable development in coastal areas."
The visit is part of a broader Euro-Mediterranean cooperation program aimed at supporting the blue economy as a lever for inclusive growth, the sustainable management of marine resources, and the enhancement of coastal communities.
The Blue Economy project aims to strengthen the capacity of Algerian cooperative organizations in the fisheries sector, promoting participatory management models, environmental sustainability, and the creation of more resilient local supply chains.
In this context, Legacoop Agroalimentare and Halieus, the Legacoop structure dedicated to international development cooperation, play a key role in training, technical assistance, and the transfer of skills between Italian cooperatives and those of North African partner countries.
"The Mediterranean must return to being a sea that unites," added Maretti. "Cooperation between Italy and Algeria, and more generally between Europe and North Africa, is a concrete step towards a sustainable, equitable, and capable of generating shared value maritime economy. This commitment fits perfectly with the European vision of a multilevel, long-term Mediterranean diplomacy."
The initiative demonstrates Legacoop Agroalimentare's commitment to promoting cooperative diplomacyvof the sea, at a time when the European Union is redefining its strategy for the Mediterranean.
A commitment that looks to the future, in the belief that the sea is not just a border, but a bridge between cultures, economies, and people.
The Economie Bleu project Economie Bleu is an international cooperation program dedicated to promoting a sustainable development model for the fishing and coastal sectors in North African countries, with particular attention to Algeria and Tunisia. Funded as part of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership initiatives, the project involves institutions, cooperatives, research centers, and civil society organizations, with the aim of strengthening the skills of fishing cooperatives in economic and environmental management and promoting the sustainable processing of seafood and the traceability of supply chains.
At the same time, it aims to support the creation of cooperation networks and partnerships between businesses in the two countries and promote the exchange of experiences and best practices among Mediterranean coastal communities. Finally it aims to contribute to the objectives of the Ocean Pact and the Agenda for the Mediterranean promoted by the European Commission.
The project is being implemented with the technical support of Halieus, the Legacoop structure dedicated to international development cooperation, and with the collaboration of the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, local cooperative organizations, and several Italian partners from the Adriatic marine sectors.
