Io Veg, you salmon

Report turns the spotlight back on Michela Brambilla: salmon would be processed in her veg company

25, Feb 2025

The latest episode of Report aired last night, Sunday 23 February, returned to the case of Michela Brambilla. After the enquiry into the alleged anomalous expenses of the animalist non-profit organisation Leidaa, the programme shed light on the parliamentarian's business activities and above all on the shed owned by her vegan and vegetarian products company, Io Veg, to answer a question: is it true that salmon is processed there?

Report claimed that Brambilla is a defendant in a trial in Lecco because she is accused of evading taxes for more than EUR 1 million, but above all, ‘that she makes salmon in her shed owned by the vegan company Io veg’. According to the report of the programme by Sigfrido Ranucci, a series of ‘loopholes’ emerged in the list of companies owned by the ex-Forzista deputy: the companies would be used for her expenses (from the political secretariat, to the luxury hotel and the blue car, up to the expenses for a gardener and stable boy), but it was discovered that hundreds of thousands of Euros collected from private donors and public bodies, from the animal welfare non-profit organisation Leidaa, of which Brambilla is president, would be used to finance her election campaign and to cover personal expenses.

Given the difficulties, according to Report, Brambilla started selling salmon and prawns under the brand name Food From the World, officially owned by a trust company, but with fish apparently bagged in Io Veg's own shed. That is, the vegan company of the animal rights parliamentarian. Report, seeing that the company appears to be a trust company with no trace of Brambilla, went looking for confirmation from the same MP to the shed in Brivio, Lecco.

What Io Veg is, or what it should be, is explained, let's say, by the website on which it is reported: ‘Io Veg is an ethical reality committed to sustainable development and social responsibility, also through ethical, vegetarian or vegan food choices. Io Veg promotes ‘veg’ lifestyles that respect animals, their rights and the environment and invests in cultural, research, communication and awareness-raising activities for the affirmation of this new consciousness'.

The reality, however, would be quite different. Not everything would be vegetarian in Io Veg, it would seem. According to what has been reconstructed by Report, Brambilla the businesswoman would use the political Brambilla to sell shrimp and salmon to large retailers thanks to her personal and privileged relationship with the owners and managing directors of leading chains.

The flaws in the MP's business would mainly concern ‘trustee’ companies. According to Report, Prime group was abandoned with 7 million debts to pay to the tax authorities: Prime's clients were diverted by the MEP to her other company, Blue line, which was then sold to a trust company with which Brambilla agreed to a 180,000 euro a year consultancy contract, plus bonuses in proportion to the business she procured with the large-scale retail trade where, thanks to her political connections, she proved to be a home-grown businesswoman. So much so that later, according to the Report report, she started selling salmon and prawns under the Food From the World brand.
