Extreme weather poses a challenge to Italian agriculture and fisheries: a survey by Legacoop Agroalimentare reveals what is happening

Damage from north to south: fish deaths in Sardinia, crops brought to a standstill in Emilia-Romagna, fields devastated in Piedmont, a water crisis in Sicily and a salt wedge in Veneto

A summer marked by record temperatures, a drought that shows no sign of letting up and, at the same time, sudden and violent storms. This is the picture emerging from the cooperatives affiliated with Legacoop Agroalimentare across various regions of Italy, where climate change is confirmed as the main structural emergency facing the country’s agriculture, agri-industry and fisheries sectors. “The picture emerging from the regions leaves no room for doubt: drought, extreme heat and sudden, violent weather events are compounding, collectively affecting agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture from the north to the south of the country. Different situations that all point to the same climate emergency,” says Cristian Maretti, president of Legacoop Agroalimentare.
