Rome, October 14, 2025 - Protecting maritime communities, the need for a new national and European fisheries policy, and unfair competition. These were the central themes of the conference "Guardians of the Sea: For a New Sustainable Fisheries Policy – Fishermen, Institutions, and Territories in Discussion," held on Tuesday, October 14, in the Refectory Hall of the Chamber of Deputies.

The initiative, promoted by Hon. Giandiego Gatta, Head of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture for Forza Italia, brought together representatives from the political, institutional, and business worlds to initiate a constructive discussion on the future of the fishing sector.

The meeting was attended, among others, by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.

Among the speakers was Federpesca director Francesca Biondo, who expressed deep concern about the proposed Single European Fund, emphasizing how it risks further sacrificing the fishing sector, already facing severe restrictions and economic challenges.

Biondo also drew attention to the problems of unfair competition in the Mediterranean and the difficulties associated with the lack of seafarers.

"Fishing is a strategic production sector for the Italian economy, requiring effective industrial and labor policies capable of supporting competitiveness, innovation, sustainability, and safety," he stated. "All objectives theoretically called for by Feampa, but which in reality are not supported by a real contribution to investments."

Finally, the Hon. Giandiego Gatta, the event's promoter, reiterated Forza Italia's commitment to a fisheries policy that enhances the sector's professionalism and promotes environmental sustainability. The goal, however, remains to avoid compromising the economic survival of businesses and to ensure ongoing dialogue between institutions, fishermen, and local communities.
