GAL FISH Liguria al Seafood Expo Global

Barcelona: an international showcase for Liguria's Blue Economy

24, Apr 2026

GAL FISH Liguria participated in the Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, one of the main international events dedicated to the seafood sector, presenting to the international public the memorandum of understanding signed with the Ligurian Chefs' Union.

The initiative, hosted at the MASAF "Piazza Italia" stand, offered significant visibility, thanks also to the speech by Dr. Roberta Cafiero, Director of the General Directorate of Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture PEMAC 4, for a model born in Liguria and aimed at promoting lesser-known local fish species, while promoting sustainability, innovation, and gastronomic culture.

The agreement between GAL FISH Liguria and the Ligurian Chefs' Union provides for a joint commitment to:

  • encourage the use of local species in cooking: horse mackerel, aliterato, farmed gilt-head bream, and La Spezia oysters;
  • support artisanal fishing and sustainable aquaculture;
  • diversify consumption;
  • strengthen the link between the seafood supply chain and the restaurant industry;
  • Promote training and outreach activities.

"Participation in the Seafood Expo Global represents a concrete opportunity to give voice to local communities and their best practices," says Augusto Comes, Vice President of GAL FISH Liguria. "The agreement with Ligurian chefs is an operational tool that allows us to translate the principles of sustainability into tangible actions capable of generating economic, cultural, and environmental value."

GAL FISH Liguria's presence at the fair confirms its commitment to promoting the Ligurian production system in the fishing, aquaculture, and Blue Economy sectors.

Representing GAL FISH Liguria was Vice President Comes, who reiterated the importance of shared leadership to support businesses in international markets. "Not isolated presences, but a production network that expresses a region, a maritime culture, and a solid and strategic seafood supply chain."

Participation in the Seafood Expo Global also represented an important opportunity to consolidate commercial relationships and strengthen the link between seafood and local identity, enhancing it in the regional food and wine and tourism offerings.

"In Barcelona, we wanted to concretely strengthen our matching, B2B, and networking efforts," adds Comes. "This was also thanks to the work of the Ligurian Chefs Association, which presented a tasting of La Spezia oysters with a basil-infused gin and tonic reduction and fillets of Lavagna-farmed sea bream marinated in citrus fruits."

The participating companies, Aqua De Mâ and O.P. Mitilicoltori Spezzini, presented their activities and future prospects, engaging with international stakeholders and journalists in a strategic opportunity to consolidate the Ligurian seafood sector's presence on foreign markets and promote seafood-related food and wine tourism.

Luca Co’, COO of Aqua De Mâ, comments: “Being present at Seafood Expo Global as part of an organized supply chain changes the quality of our dialogue with international operators. Sustainable Ligurian aquaculture now has the technical and structural credentials—traceability, certifications, offshore farming—to compete in foreign markets with its own recognizable profile. This confirms that we're headed in the right direction, a direction that is now possible thanks also to the fruitful collaboration between private operators and the Liguria Region, which has spearheaded important legislative and operational initiatives aimed at supporting the growth and development of the sector.”

Federico Pinza, Director of the Spezzini Mussel Farming Unit, adds: “After years of hearing about Seafood Expo Global but never attending, thanks to MASAF, the Liguria Region, and GAL FISH Liguria, we were able to participate in this very important event for us. We brought La Spezia's rapidly growing oyster production to raise awareness, and we will certainly participate again next year in a more significant capacity.”

Participation in Seafood Expo Global confirms the role of GAL FISH Liguria as a key player in the development of sustainable and integrated models capable of uniting the seafood economy, innovation, and regional development.
