‘With regard to the tensions of the last few days concerning appointments within the European Commission, we want to reiterate how fundamental it is to guarantee and defend a strong representation of Italy within the Commission, which, especially in the area of agri-food and fisheries policies, can make the difference, in the protection of a fundamental primary sector that guarantees sustainable and quality products on the tables of European citizens, in the defence of the specificities of fishing in the Mediterranean, and in ensuring that alongside environmental sustainability, at the heart of European policies, the social and economic sustainability of a sector that needs more than ever to be safeguarded and put in a position to work safely. This is why we hope Italy can be represented among the Vice-Presidents of the European Commission,' the National Federation of Fishing Enterprises said in a note.
