Cristian Maretti (president of Legacoop Agroalimentare): ‘The promotion carried out is good but we need to continue, to be competitive on the markets with added value products’
Fish consumption on the tables of Europeans, including those of Italians, is falling, but fish from non-EU countries is still being imported. Although this trend seems to have reversed, so much so that in 2023 6% less fish was imported. This is what emerges from the report ‘The EU Fish Market’ by EUMOFA (European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products), according to which, in 2023, Italian households' spending on fish products increased by 6% to almost 13 billion, or EUR 62.3 billion across Europe, despite a 5% drop in domestic consumption. In 2022, consumption was 14% lower than in 2021, while in 2023, it was a further 12% lower than the previous year, totalling 245,112 tonnes.
