Tastes of the sea: in Lignano Sabbiadoro it is time for the ‘Festa delle Cape’.

From 8-9 and 15-16 March 2025, the Friulian seaside destination celebrates culinary tradition and the authentic taste of the sea.

Lignano Sabbiadoro, 4 March 2025 - The ‘cape’, or ‘cappelunghe’, as they are called in the dialect of Lignano, are the delicious molluscs that live hidden in the sandy seabed along the coast of the Upper Adriatic Sea, identifiable only by the most expert fishermen thanks to the characteristic holes left by these shellfish in the sand. The local seafaring tradition has it that in Lignano Sabbiadoro these treasures of the sea are dedicated to the historic ‘Festa delle Cape’, an initiative born from an idea of some fishermen to promote the seafood and culinary specialities of the area. Through these scents and flavours, the largest Friulian seaside resort is told in a real explosion of taste.

This year, the initiative will be held on the weekends of 8-9 and 15-16 March, from 11.30 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a kitchen break from 3 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. in Piazza Marcello d'Olivo, in the heart of Lignano Pineta, where it will be possible to taste typical fish dishes. Cappe lunghe (long snails), pevarasse (as clams are called in the Friulian dialect), grilled sardines, breaded sardines, sardines in saor and squids are only some of the specialities that will enrich the menu together with other local delicacies: a unique opportunity to taste the delicacies of the sea, but also an opportunity to immerse in the gastronomic tradition and discover the cultural roots of Lignano.

Some traditional recipes boast ancient origins. Sarde in saor, for example, were created to enhance a poor fish such as sardines: the ‘saor’ is a sweet-and-sour preparation based on onions and vinegar that guarantees a long preservation of the dish. The Cape, on the other hand, are more versatile, perfect for making hors d'oeuvres, first courses, main courses and one-dish meals to be enjoyed in any season: in winter to recreate the atmosphere of the warmer months, in summer to bring all the flavour of the sea to the table.


After enjoying these delicacies, you can take advantage of the nearby golden sandy beach for a regenerating walk, heading eastwards, from Pineta to Sabbiadoro, as far as the characteristic Faro Rosso (Red Lighthouse), or westwards, exploring the Riviera coastline as far as the mouth of the Tagliamento River, where the fresh waters join the salty waters of the Adriatic.

The event, now in its 40th edition, will see some novelties and the participation of visitors attracted by the authentic flavours of the sea and the strong spirit of solidarity that characterises this event. In addition to promoting knowledge of the territory and its seafood products, in fact, the Festa delle Cape donates its proceeds to charity every year. In the past editions many organizations and associations have received donations, including Una Mano per Vivere, the Ass. Trapiantati Fegato FVG, Caritas Lignano Sabbiadoro, the Ass. Lotta Sclerosi Multipla, the LILT and other local associations.
