Parmigiano Reggiano: production has risen by over 5 per cent since the start of the year

The members’ meeting has approved new measures for 2026 and 2027 to curb the rise in production and prevent market imbalances

15, Oct 2026

Production of Parmigiano Reggiano has risen by over 5 per cent since the start of the year. This increase risks exceeding the market’s capacity to absorb the product, with possible repercussions on prices and the profitability of the dairies. For this reason, today, Wednesday 14 October, the General Assembly of Consortium Members, meeting in Reggio Emilia, approved the “Equilibrio Project” with 97.9 per cent of the votes. This is a plan of measures for 2026 and 2027 aimed at curbing production growth, safeguarding the value of Parmigiano Reggiano and protecting the entire supply chain.

The plan provides for higher financial contributions for dairies that exceed their allocated production quotas, with amounts of up to 65 euros per quintal in 2027 for those with the highest overrun figures. In addition, new restrictions (such as a 5 per cent deduction) have been introduced for those who sell their company quotas outside the supply chain. The entire package will officially come into force as soon as the go-ahead is given by the Ministry of Agriculture (MASAF), which is expected by the end of the year. The general meeting also ratified the appointment of Guglielmo Garagnani as president of the Bologna Section, following the resignation of Giulio Ghiaroni. Garagnani also joins the Consortium’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the remainder of the term of office, until 2028.
