The IZSVe study
For several years now, the European Commission has been recommending that all Member States reduce the routine practice of tail docking (caudectomy) in piglets. This practice is used to prevent biting, which could instead be reduced by improving farming conditions. For this reason, the farming of pigs with intact tails is an indirect indicator of animal welfare.
The IZSVe study
IZSVe researchers conducted a retrospective analysis on a sample of 22 farms in the same supply chain that had voluntarily undertaken the process of abandoning tail docking (caudectomy) in piglets between 2015 and 2022. The process followed three phases: 1) 100% of pigs with docked tails; 2) up to 50% of pigs with intact tails; 3) 100% of pigs with intact tails. The analysis revealed that the transition from phase 1 to phase 2 was successful, while the transition to phase 3 increased mortality and injuries at slaughter and reduced feed conversion ratios. The study highlights the complexity of effectively managing pigs that have not undergone caudectomy.
