The European Commission has presented the first European Livestock Strategy (EU Livestock Strategy), a long-term plan aimed at strengthening the sector’s competitiveness, resilience and sustainability, whilst recognising its strategic role in food security and the development of rural areas. An Action Plan on Protein was also presented at the same time, aimed at reducing the EU’s dependence on imports.
The strategy has been developed to address the sector’s main challenges: low profitability, rising production costs, emerging animal diseases, climate change, market developments and growing public concern for animal welfare.
