The global supply of terrestrial animal-sourced food (TASF), driven mainly by eggs, poultry and pork, has increased significantly over the past sixty years. This expansion has made livestock farming one of the fastest-growing sectors in agriculture, according to a new study by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).
The report, “Drivers of supply and demand for terrestrial animal-sourced food. An empirical and policy overview of the state of knowledge and gaps”, provides a comprehensive, science-based global assessment of the livestock sector’s contribution to food security, sustainable agri-food systems, nutrition and healthy diets, and identifies key knowledge gaps. The report covers production systems of all sizes, from integrated crop-livestock systems to specialised livestock farms, grazing and pastoral systems, as well as the rearing and hunting of wild animals.
