EU-Mercosur agreement marks turning point in relations with South America

The European Commission has presented to the Council its proposals for the signing and conclusion of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement, finally launching the political process for the adoption of an agreement we strongly hope for and support. This officially marks the beginning of a new historic phase in relations between the European Union and a group of South American countries with which it is essential for us to consolidate cooperation, promote trade, and foster the sharing of common rules for the benefit of our companies and our country.
We hope that the approval process will be concluded as soon as possible so that all the opportunities offered by the new agreement can be realized. In particular, those resulting from the establishment of preferential tariff quotas for beef imports into the EU, where the availability of meat for the industry has been significantly reduced over the past two years, both due to the implementation of new regulations specific to cattle and the spread of certain veterinary diseases in Europe. In this context, the reliance on non-EU suppliers has necessarily increased, therefore the expansion “The increase in the amount of import quotas is a prospect we view with great favor,” stated Lorenzo Beretta, president of ASSICA.
