The 60% of the product consumed on Italian tables comes from abroad, generating a cross-border trade flow of EUR 3.5 billion/year
“Although the Italian beef sector is significantly short of national demand, with approximately 60% of the meat consumed coming from abroad, I believe there is still ample room for growth as long as we firmly aim for real and distinguishable quality production that also includes optimizing company management”.
Stefano Pignani, director of ANABIC (National Association of Italian Beef Cattle Breeders representing the Chianina, Marchigiana, Romagnola, Maremmana and Podolica breeds) has no doubts: “the official Ismea data – he explains – have highlighted that the massive share of animals and beef imported from abroad causes a transfer to operators in other countries of over 3.5 billion euros/year. An enormous figure that could be reduced if the large stables dedicated to raising young veal began to pay more attention to those that produce calves of native Italian breeds, also allowing the consumer to better recognize the origin of the product purchased”.
