PSA: Cerep leads a project to protect Italian cured meat exports

Interview to Francesco Feliziani, member of the Scientific Committee of the Giornata della Suinicolturaplanned for the 15th October2025 at RMH Hotel in Modena

24, Jun 2025

Four Experimental Zooprophylactic Institutes are involved (Umbria-Marche, Lombardy-Emilia Romagna, Venezie and Abruzzo-Molise); some thirty researchers are involved; a lead partner, the National Reference Centre for Swine Fever in Perugia (Cerep); and a Scientific Manager: Francesco Feliziani.

This is the team that for about a year and a half has been working on the Strategic Current Research 2023 project entitled African Swine Fever Free Meet Export Agreement on Trading (ASFree M.e.a.t.), promoted and financed by the Ministry of Health with a contribution of 250,000 euros. 'The project,' explains Francesco Feliziani, 'tackles the problem of the persistence of the PSA virus in cured meats with a rigorous scientific approach, using traditional methods such as viral isolation, but also more modern systems such as digital Pcr. We are also testing the sanitising capacity of the innovative Hpp (high pressure processing) treatment, a non-thermal technique that could inactivate the virus in packaged foods'.

Francesco Feliziani, Head of the National Reference Centre for Swine Pest (Cerep), is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Giornata della Suinicoltura (www.giornatadellasuinicoltura.it) and will be among the speakers at the eighth edition of the event, scheduled on 15 October 2025 at the RMH Hotel in Modena
